In a fine gilded oak flat section frame

Evan’s early work consisted mostly of photomontages and mural paintings. His large-scale watercolours and gouaches date from 1967 onwards, and many of them were exhibited at the series of solo exhibitions held at the Redfern Gallery from 1979. The influence of Edward Burra is obvious, but Evans’ work remained highly distinctive and the subject matter contemporary. The landscape of Suffolk, where Evans lived, bears no relation to this curiously titled surrealist landscape, the inspiration for which is more likely to be imagined than observed.

David Evans 1929–1988

Painter of landscape, still life, fantasies and murals, born in London. Studied at Central School of Arts and Crafts with Keith Vaughan. Early in his career he showed photomontages at Gallery One and gained several commissions; these included a design for the Hollywood Room in the Observer Film Exhibition, 1956, and a mural for the Soup Kitchen, Knightsbridge. He began painting watercolours and gouaches in 1967, two years before he settled in Suffolk. They were not shown until 1973, when his work was included in a mixed show at Deben Gallery, Woodbridge. In 1975 his work was included in summer show at Redfern Gallery, where he held solo exhibitions from 1979, after showing one-man at McMurray Gallery for three years, 1976-7-8. After his death in a road accident, Redfern gave him a small memorial show in 1988.
